The short version
Share the Mental Load exists to reduce the load on couples, not to collect data about them. We ask for the least we can, we keep it for as long as you want us to, and no longer, and we never sell it. Two commitments matter most, so we will say them first and plainly:
- Your couple’s data is never used to train AI models. Not ours, not anyone else’s.
- You can export or delete all of your data, completely, at any time. It is yours, and leaving is always easy.
The rest of this page explains the detail behind those promises.
Who we are
“Share the Mental Load”, “we” and “us” refer to the small team that builds and runs the Share the Mental Load application and this website. We are the data controller for the personal information described here. You can reach us about anything on this page at the contact address given in the application.
What we collect
We collect only what the product needs to work for you and your partner.
Account information
When you sign up, you sign in through a third-party provider (for example, a Google or Apple account). We receive a basic identifier and your email address from that provider. We store your chosen display name, your identity colour, and your timezone.
Your couple’s content
This is the information you and your partner create as you use the app — the cards in your deck, tasks and their occurrences, projects and updates, and the notes you write. It is visible to both partners in your couple, and to no one else.
Technical information
To keep the service running and secure, we process basic technical data such as device and browser type, and we keep short-lived logs of errors and security events. We do not build advertising profiles and we do not use third-party tracking or advertising cookies.
How we use it
- To provide the app — your shared deck, projects and the daily briefing.
- To sync changes between you and your partner in real time.
- To keep the service secure, reliable, and free of abuse.
- To respond to you when you contact us for support.
We use your information for these purposes and not for others. We do not sell personal data, and we do not share it for advertising.
The AI assistant and your data
The app includes an AI assistant. When you ask it something, the relevant parts of your couple’s data are sent to a third-party AI provider so the assistant can answer or act. This is the same kind of processing any cloud service relies on, and it is bound by these rules:
- It is never used for training. Your couple’s content is not used to train, fine-tune, or improve any AI model — ours or a provider’s.
- The assistant works strictly within your own couple’s data. It cannot see other couples’ information.
- The assistant is a supplement, never a gate. Everything it can do, you can also do by hand, so you are never required to use it.
Where your data is held, and for how long
Your data is held with reputable infrastructure providers who process it on our instructions. We keep your information for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we remove your personal data within a short, defined period, except for the minimum we are legally required to retain.
Exporting and deleting your data
You are always in control of your information:
- Export. You can request a complete copy of your data in a portable, readable format at any time.
- Delete. You can delete your account and your personal data completely at any time. Because a couple is shared, deletion is handled with care for both partners; the app explains exactly what happens before you confirm.
Depending on where you live, you may also have rights to access, correct, or object to certain processing of your data. We honour these requests, and using the app’s built-in export and deletion tools is the quickest way to act on them.
How we keep it safe
We use encryption in transit, access controls, and a strict separation between couples so that one couple’s data can never be reached by another. No system is perfectly secure, but protecting what you trust us with is a first-order concern, not an afterthought.
Children
Share the Mental Load is a tool for adults running a household together. It is not directed at children and is not intended for anyone under 18.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy in a way that materially affects you, we will let you know within the app before the change takes effect. The date at the top of this page always shows when it was last revised.
